Beverly [Gardner], Fern (Mason), Barb (Doyce's wife)

        John Walter DeVore was born on March 31, 1903, in Decatur County, Iowa, to William Spencer and Sophrona Mae (Palmer) DeVore. He married Fern May Mason on June 7, 1932, at Bethany, Missouri. Fern was born May 1, 1907, in Lucas County, to Ode and Josie (Waugh) Mason.

            Many remember John as the town barber for many years of Woodburn and Ottawa, and later Osceola.  John, Fern, and Beverly moved to Ottawa from Weldon in 1933 or 1934.  Fern was from Woodburn originally and John had barbered there before their marriage.  John owned and operated a barbershop on the north side of Highway 34 at Ottawa and Fern operated the Ottawa Telephone Office. 

      In 1945, John took a job with a barbershop in Osceola, where they moved.  Fern later worked at Coast to Coast for many years. John continued his barbering career, which covered over 60 years, until 1987 when he retired to care for Fern who had suffered a stroke.  John died on June 28, 1990, and Fern passed away on June 28, 1991. They are buried at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola.  Their children are Beverly Ann [Gardner] and John Doyce.
