         Earnest Claude Smith, was born June 29, 1916, in Woodburn, the son of Claude V. and Maude Fern (Ewoldsen) Smith.  He married Laura Herndon, daughter of Levi and Lizzie Hazel (Robey) Herndon, on August 18, 1945, in West Des Moines, Iowa.   Earnest served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.  He was a life member of the Herndon-Oehlert American Legion Post #157 at Woodburn and Fifth District Vice-Commander of the American Legion.  They were members of the Woodburn United Methodist Church.
           
            Laura taught school for 29 years in Lucas and Clarke counties.  They owned and operated a farm north of Woodburn most of their married life.  Earnest also worked at VyLactos Labs in Des Moines for 15 years.  He died on March 9, 1993.  After Earnest’s death, Laura and son, Dennis, continued to operate and live on the farm.  Laura passed away on September 7, 2008.  She and Earnest are buried at the Woodburn Cemetery.  Their children:  Shari [Van Luchene], Dennis and Bonnie [Rohr].

         Wilbert Leroy “Gup” Smith was born December 20, 1924 in Jackson Township, son of Claude V. and Maude F. (Ewoldsen) Smith.  After graduating from Woodburn High School, he served in the Army from June 1943 to November 1945, with the 29th Division. 
            Wilbert married Rosalie Frances Bishop on June 24, 1951.  Rosalie was born June 15, 1933, daughter of Lawrence and Hazel Elizabeth Rose (Sinclair) Bishop.  After the death of her mother in 1936, Rosalie was raised by her paternal grandmother, Pearl (Fry) Bishop. Pearl moved to Woodburn in 1943, and lived the first house north of the lumberyard.  Gup and Rosalie farmed northwest of Ottawa and ran the Ottawa gas station for a time.    They now reside in Nixa, Missouri.   Their children:  Sheila Diane [Stepko], Michael Leroy, Kendall Wayne, Susan Elizabeth [Gaumer], Shelly Larissa [Lamczyk].
