Bernice and Chuck Grimm
Charles Francis “Chuck” Grimm was born in Clarke County on August 24, 1901, the son of Vinton Wallace and Mary Jane (Fox) Grimm. On May 4, 1929, he married Bernice Ora Woods, daughter of Charley and Ora (Marquis) Woods. Bernice was born on March 21, 1909, in Lucas County, Iowa.
Chuck and Bernice were lifelong residents of Clarke County. They lived on several farms north of Woodburn in Sections 8 or 9, 12 and 31 of Jackson Township. Here they raised their two sons, Roger and Monty. The boys attended country schools until finishing eighth grade. In March, 1961, after retiring, Chuck and Bernice moved to Osceola. They tired of Osceola and in 1967 moved back near Woodburn to the Ray Martin farm on Highway 34 in Section 13 of Jackson Township. Bernice passed away on September 27, 1981, at Des Moines, Iowa. Chuck worked on the farm with his son, Roger, until his death on January 22, 1989, at Osceola, Iowa.
Kathy (McBroom) and Roger "Rod" Grimm
Roger Boyd Grimm, son of Charles F. and Bernice Ora (Woods) Grimm, was born February 24, 1930, at the Clarke County Hospital. He attended country schools near Woodburn and attended high school for a short time at Osceola, boarding with the Ray Kerns family. Roger worked with his father on the farm after dropping out of high school and joined the Navy in 1949 with Johnny Stearns and Jimmie Wilson. Roger served only a year, but was recalled in 1952 and discharged in 1954.
Roger met Kathryn Lorinda McBroom in February, 1954, and they were married in Indianola on November 12, 1954. Kathryn was born in LeRoy, Iowa, on November 22, 1935, the daughter of James Keith and Vera (Hockensmith) McBroom. Kathryn graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1953 and was employed in Des Moines at the time of their marriage. Their first home was just east of Woodburn in Ralph Norman’s parents’ home. Roger worked with his father on the farm and was then hired by Firestone in Des Moines, where they moved in the spring of 1955.
In March, 1957, they purchased an 80 acre farm in Section 11 of Jackson Township and moved back to the Woodburn area. Roger continued working at Firestone and commuted daily from the farm. In March, 1961, he quit his job at Firestone and took up farming full time. They moved to his parents’ farm where they remained fourteen years. Chuck and Roger formed a partnership and farmed together until Chuck’s death. Roger’s brother, Monty, lived nearby and their children were very close and spent a lot of time together and also with their grandparents.
In 1974, Roger and Kathryn purchased the Herschel Oehlert farm east of Woodburn in Section 23 of Jackson Township. They lived there fourteen years before buying a home in Osceola where they now live. Their children are Charles Bradley "Brad", Cynthia Lynn "Cindy" [Wright], Cristy Cay "Cris" [Paulsen], and Cathie Rene [Houck].

Marge and Monty Grimm
Monty Charles “Jake” Grimm, born May 30, 1933, in Clarke County. He attended Clarke County country schools and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1952. In 1959, he married Marjory Ann Van Billiard, the daughter of Arne and Mary (Adams) Van Billiard of Colfax, Iowa. Monty and Marge lived in Indianola for a short time before moving to a farm north of Woodburn. They ran the Ottawa gas station from 1961-62. They lived and farmed in Clarke County for 18 years before moving to Arkansas in 1979. Their children are: Kimberly Ann [Major], Brent Matthew, and Beth Michele [Aiello]. The children all attended schools in Woodburn and Osceola before moving to Arkansas.
